Fukuda Art Museum in Arashiyama Kyoto is presents a special exhibition on the theme of "Prayer," held from July 18 to September 6, 2026. We are happy to introduce our fine Buddhist paintings and auspicious paintings as well as the works of Higashiyama Kaii(1908–1999), a giant of Japanese painting whose every brush stroke was a prayer.

As the museum’s first-ever exhibition dedicated to shunga (erotic art), this exhibition proudly presents the public debut of Chigo Sōshi, a legendary shunga masterpiece created in the early 14th century.

The exhibition features a diverse range of works, including pieces themed around "love" by renowned artists such as Uemura Shoen and Kaburagi Kiyokata. It also showcases Koshibagaki Zoshi (The Tale of the Brushwood Fence)—one of Japan’s oldest known pieces of shunga, copied here by the Edo-period master Tani Buncho—alongside hand-painted shunga by Tsukioka Settei and others, and Katsushika Hokusai’s definitive masterpiece, Nami Chidori (Wave and Plovers).
