After All, We Love Kyoto

Kyoto has always been a favourite of artists.  Arashiyama, where the Fukuda Art Museum is located, has been a favorite scenic spot for emperors and nobles for over a thousand years.  In the Edo period (1603-1868), many cherry trees were planted and the area was crowded with visitors.  Many painters such as Maruyama Ōkyo, who lived in the city of Kyoto, often visited the area to sketch the wonderful panorama.

From the Meiji period onwards, many of the leading members of the Kyoto Circle of Painters, such as Takeuchi Seihō, Kawamura Manshū and Tomita Keisen, set up studios in Arashiyama. These included Yokoyama Taikan, a leading figure in the Tokyo Circle of Painters who loved the scenery of Kyoto.

This exhibition will feature works by Maruyama Ōkyo, Takeuchi Seihō, Uemura Shōen and others from the modern and contemporary art world of Kyoto, as well as paintings associated with the city.
