Takehisa Yumeji – The painter is also a poet and a designer
The Fukuda Art Museum of Saga Arashiyama, Kyoto is fortunate to hold a collection of valuable works by Takehisa Yumeji. You can see many of these in this exhibition held to celebrate the life of the artist. Next year, 2024 will be both the 140th anniversary of Yumeji’s birth and the 90th anniversary of his death.
The late Kōjiro Kawamura (honorary director of the Shimonoseki City Art Museum) was a friend and patron of Yumeji. Eventually, he collected 334 works by the artist. This ‘Old Kawamura Collection’ was acquired by Fukuda Art Museum. In a comprehensive show, more than 200 of these pieces will be on display for the first time in 12 years. As well as once-seen, never-forgotten, tall, ephemeral ‘Yumeji-style beauties’, you can see numerous design drawings and illustrations, rare landscapes, and even sheet music.
After Yumeji had managed single-handedly, without the help of mentors, to establish himself as a popular painter, his life did not always go as planned. In this exhibition, you can find out much about Yumeji the creator. On show are masterpieces such as Twelve Views of Nagasaki, Ten Themes of Women, Trip, and Seishun-fu, which were key works in the artist’s life. Meanwhile, from his wonderful music-score cover illustrations for composers such as Seno’o and Nakayama Shinpei, you can also see how much he enjoyed his musical collaborations. Meanwhile, his haiku bear witness also to his literary talent.
We hope that visitors will discover a new side to Yumeji that is not confined to the framework of a beautiful painter.
